When To Change Pool Water: How Often Should I Drain My Pool?

When summer arrives, your pool calls! Swimming is a great way to beat the heat and spend time with friends and loved ones. Have you ever stopped and thought about what’s left in the pool water after getting out? Some of the things left behind include sweat, hair, dead skin cells, fecal matter and sometimes even urine. Let’s talk about when to change your pool water!

Even with a filtration system, pools need to be drained and refilled to ensure it works. Drain your pool completely only if it’s necessary. Hire a professional to do this to make sure your pool stays in top shape.

How Often Should I Change My Pool Water?

This answer greatly varies between pools. The amount of time can range from two months to as long as five to seven years. Some of the following factors come into play:

  • Number of daily swimmers
  • Climate
  • Type of water (hard or soft)
  • Pool maintenance

The more often that you use your pool, the more you will have to change the water. When people go swimming, water comes out of the pool with them. Splashing and carrying water out on your bodies are some examples of how we take water out of the pool after swimming.

The climate makes a difference as well. For example, rain washes bacteria, dirt, algae spores and other debris into your pool. In turn, it can reduce the effects of chlorine which can throw off the water’s pH balance. On hot days, UV rays reduce the amount of chlorine. Chlorine is essential to killing reducing germs that can make swimmers sick. Algae growth becomes more frequent as well because the spores need sunlight and water to grow.

There are two types of pool water. There’s hard water that has more calcium and magnesium ions. Soft water contains few minerals in comparison. Hard water can stop the pool structure from corrosion, but the water that’s too hard can break down fixtures. Soft water makes for a cleaner pool. However, pools need calcium and soft water will take it from the concrete or tiles of an in-ground pool.

Make sure to create a routine when it comes to your pool. This includes cleaning it as well as ensuring the correct pH level. Having a filter will help maintain such levels. You can check them using a water testing kit. Unbalanced pH levels make the water too acidic which causes skin irritation. The appropriate level should be around 7.4.

When Do I Change and Drain My Pool’s Water?

Deciding when to change your pool water is important. Most in-ground pools should be drained and have the water replaced every five to seven years. How often you drain your pool depends on a couple of things:

  • Maintenance and upkeep
  • Usage
  • Environment

Drain your pool during the mild season when it’s not too hot and not too cold. Spring and autumn are ideal times of the year. This will prevent pool surfaces and filtration systems from being damaged by sun, heat or moisture. You should avoid draining the pool for cleaning as this is done underwater most of the time.

Draining your pool after heavy rain or storms will add extra pressure to the bottom of the pool. This in turn creates a water table that creates a heavy weight of excess water that damages the pool’s floor. Drainers and skimmers will do most of the work for you when it rains. However, it’s always best to clean any debris out of the pool manually because the filter will not get everything.  So there are a few occasions when you will need to drain your pool after the rain.

How Should I Drain Pool Water?

Determine whether your pool needs to be drained by speaking to a professional. Pool maintenance can be done when the pool is partially full. Hire a professional pool maintenance contractor or company to drain your pool if you determine your pool needs to be drained. Hiring a professional to drain your pool costs less than fixing a bad draining.

If you choose to take on draining your own pool, it’s best to use a submersible pump. Using the filter pump is the less appealing option because it’s expensive to replace. Drain your water into a sewer line on your property and make sure to not drain more than 12 gallons per minute. The process takes at least a couple of days. If you are not experienced, always hire a professional to drain your pool!

How Do I Keep Water in my Pool Longer?

Maintaining the appropriate level of chlorine makes all the difference. It kills bacteria and germs, controls organic debris perspiration and body oils and deters algae. Shower before hopping into the pool. Chlorine reacts to:

  • Sweat
  • Makeup
  • Sunscreen
  • Perfume
  • Lotion
  • Urine and fecal matter

All of these are things that can be found on swimmers entering the pool. This can react to chlorine and is the reason that some pools end up with a strong odour. A scent coming from the pool can be a sign that there are multiple compounds in the pool reacting with chlorine.

To maintain water quality and pool infrastructure, chlorinate the water daily. It prevents algae and microorganisms from growing. Clean the pool using suction sweepers and brushes on alternating days. Maintain a pH level between 7.2 and 7.6 to avoid irritating your skin. It’s recommended to have 1 ppm (part per million) of chlorine to kill algae or bacteria effectively.

Having an effective water filtration system recirculates water and returns it to the pool. Quickly removing filterable contaminants reduces the impact on the disinfection system.

Backwashing removes organic materials from your pool and keeps the water clean. This removes built-up contaminants from the pool by reversing the flow of water through the filter.  This sends them to waste or out through the hose connected to the pump. Backwash your pool filter before adding any chemicals to the water.

In Conclusion

Making sure that your pool is drained at the right time is as important. Knowing when to change your pool water is a key part of your pool lasting longer. It’s also makes swimming safer for you, your family and friends!

What Are The Benefits Of Using A Central Heating System In The Home?

Choosing the right heating system for your property can make a world of difference for both people and pets. Modern ducted heating systems tend to be the best option overall due to being both extremely cost-effective and highly customizable. Here are the 5 main benefits central heating systems provide:

      1. Comfort & convenience

No one likes to come home to a cold home, let alone spend time in one. Even if you have a great electric heater or air conditioner, you will still have to wait ages for them to fully warm up your living space.

Central HVAC eliminates this problem by enabling you to set consistent temperatures throughout the day. Smart thermostats and other modern features even enable you to set specific temperatures for each room, automatically lower the temperatures while you are asleep or outside, and so on. What’s more, floor heating keeps you and your loved ones comfy in a way that other heating systems simply can’t match.

      2. It’s healthier

Central heating systems maintain even temperatures throughout a home. This helps prevent various health issues such as asthma, hypothermia, bronchitis, strokes, and heart attacks. It also reduces condensation in your property, which reduces the risk of mold and mildew.

      3. Eco-friendliness

Today’s central HVAC systems produce a lot less carbon dioxide and use up less energy than electric heaters and other types of heating. This is especially true of geothermal heating systems, which use the natural heat in the earth to warm up your home during the cold winter months.

      4. Saves you money

Modern central heating systems are far more energy-efficient than their older counterparts. This provides significant savings in the form of reduced utility bills all year round (and especially during winter) and enables you to recoup part of or most of the cost of your heating system installation after only a few years.

      5. Boost to property value

Properties that are equipped with central HVAC systems are highly sought after on the real estate market. If the heating system in your house is still under warranty and/or relatively new, your home will be far more likely to attract the right kind of buyer.

For a full Central Heating System installation or service, leave us your contact details below and we will contact you.

Paphos Municpality Will Build New Student Dorms

The municipality of Paphos is investing another €14 million for the construction of 203-room student residences and Z&X Mechanical Installations is proud to be part of this project which will be completed within less than a year from now (by 25/09/2024).

Paphos municipality signed a contract on Friday for the construction of the new student accommodation rooms, as the mayor vowed that major changes are on the way.

Paphos mayor Mr. Phedonas Phedonos said he is very proud that about 90 contracts have been signed in recent years that have “transformed Paphos”. The latest is the student accommodation project, which includes the municipality having paid €1.2 million for about 5,000 square meters of land. The accommodation will provide 203 rooms of 24 square meters each. The third phase of the project is centered on building tennis and basketball courts, parking spots, and green spaces, that will cover 32 plots, the mayor said. He said the accommodation should be ready within 11 months, with the works being carried out by A. N. Ioannou Construction Ltd.

The mayor thanked the church committee for agreeing to join the plots of land on which the Cyprus University of Technology Paphos (Tepak) is located with land on which a church is located, along with the land of the student accommodation.

Mr. Phedonas also explained that the state has provided a significant amount of land for Tepak’s agricultural institute in Acheleia. He emphasized that the municipality is determined to continue upgrading the area as it works alongside private property owners, including businesses and shop owners. The mayor praised Tepak’s presence in Paphos as “increasing the critical mass of the city, [it’s] a step towards creating a new pillar in the district’s economy”. The recent projects, he said, have transformed the city’s identity and broadened its horizons.

Other positive changes have been a significant upgrade of the tourism product and sector, the creation of new jobs, and the enrichment of society and the district’s culture. It was reported in September that classes got underway at the Paphos branch of the Cyprus University of Technology with 300 students enrolled. Mr. Phedonos hailed the modern higher education facilities, with final costs estimated at €20m, as he said the university expects a future enrolment of 1,000 students in total.

The Tepak School of Tourism Management, Hospitality, and Entrepreneurship is joined in Paphos by a branch of the American University of Beirut.

How to Lower Your Electric Bill

Light bulbs and change on a table.

Apart from addressing the root causes of a high electric bill, there are a few additional steps you can take to reduce your bill even further.

          1. Invest in a Smart AC Controller or a Smart Thermostat

Heating and cooling costs make up a big chunk of your total electricity bill. Smart AC controllers can help you get AC costs under control through useful features such as geofencing, humidity and temperature triggers, usage tracking, etc.

          2. Always Unplug Unused Appliances

          Person taking out a switch

Many modern – day energy appliances don’t shut down when given the command. Instead, they enter standby mode so they can power up quickly the next time you need to use them. The problem is that if you leave these devices plugged in, they will continue drawing energy. Over time, this energy usage adds up, leading to sky – high electric bills. So the next time you are wondering why your electric bill is so high, walk around your house and look for any unused devices still plugged in.

          3. Turn Any Fans or Lights off When You Leave the Room

Fan with light in the center

Many people believe that lights and fans don’t use much energy, so they don’t bother turning them off when they exit the room. However, if you routinely leave ceiling fans and lights on, you will have a high electricity bill. So make it a habit to check any lights and ceiling fans when you leave a room. You will notice a difference in your electricity bill soon enough.

          4. Invest in an Electricity Usage Monitor

If you think an appliance consumes excess electricity, a watt meter or electricity usage monitor is your best friend. An electricity usage monitor helps you determine how much electricity an appliance uses. Plug the monitor into an outlet, and then plug your appliance into the monitor. Then, run the appliance for 24 hours. The monitor will tell you its electricity consumption for 24 hours. Multiply that figure by 365 to get an idea of your yearly cost. An electricity usage monitor can help you understand why your electricity bill is so high and where you need to reduce usage.

          5. Keep Your Fridge Full

Turns out, always keeping your fridge full of food can actually be good for your wallet! Food acts as insulation and helps your fridge keep food items cold. Every time you open the fridge door, you introduce warm air into it. If you already have a lot of chilled food items in your fridge, they will retain cold air and that warm air will have less of an effect. On the other hand, if your fridge is always empty, the large amount of warm air that enters every time you open it has more of an impact and it has to work harder to keep cool.

Why Is My Electricity Bill So High All of a Sudden?

If you already follow all the tips given in this article, yet your electricity bill has suddenly skyrocketed, there could be a few reasons:

          6. Electricity Leak

If your bill is suddenly higher than usual, an electricity leak could be to blame. An electricity leak occurs when electricity flows to the earth through the earth wire, usually due to faulty wiring. An electric leak can be expensive and dangerous. If you turn off the main breaker for your house and your electric meter is still showing electricity consumption, you may have a leak. If you suspect a leak, contact a licensed electrician immediately. Do not attempt to fix it yourself as you can get a nasty electric shock.

          7. Rising Inflation

Your electricity bill may sometimes increase for reasons not under your control. If there is overall inflation in the country, naturally, your electric bill will also increase. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do in this situation. However, you can be even more diligent about not wasting electricity and reducing your consumption as much as possible.

          8. Someone Could Be Stealing Your Electricity

A sudden unexplained increase in your electricity bill could be caused by pilferage. Switching off the main breaker is a simple and easy way to determine if someone is stealing your electricity. Contact the power company immediately if your electric meter continues showing electricity usage. They will send a technician to resolve the issue.

Which Appliances Use The Most Energy In A Home?

Heaters use the most energy in a home. They account for the highest percentage of a home’s total electricity consumption. Water heaters and cooling appliances are the second and third biggest consumers of residential electricity, respectively.

          A heater

          Does Unplugging Appliances Save Electricity?

Yes, unplugging appliances does save electricity. The average household has 40 products constantly drawing energy. Combined, these can amount to 10% of total residential electricity use. High electricity bills are a source of great financial stress and hardship. With these tips, you can reduce the burden on your wallet and benefit the environment. It’s a win – win! Start implementing these tips and enjoy big savings in no time!

When Is The Best Time To Turn On The Heater?

Fall is a magical season – a time of cozy weather, burnt orange leaves, and the delicious scent of pumpkin spice. But it’s also a time that can be most unpredictable when it comes to temperature. One moment you feel hot; the next, you are piling on layers. This can make it tricky to know exactly when to switch on your heating system. Adding the rising energy costs to this dilemma and it can feel truly daunting to decide when to turn on the heater. Some might say that cold weather automatically warrants the heat to be switched on, while others argue that it’s best to wait until the temperature drops significantly. Some believe that looking at weather conditions on a day-to-day basis is a more accurate way to decide when to turn the heat on during fall. So, what’s the right answer? When should you actually switch on your heating system? Read on and find out!

When to Turn on the Heat With Cold Weather Around the Corner

When it comes to turning the heat on, there’s no fixed temperature value, as it can vary depending on your location, weather conditions, home insulation, comfort level, and cost considerations. Here are a few things to remember when deciding the best time to turn the heat on in your house.

            Your Home Temperature

According to WHO, the indoor temperature should be between 18 C – 23 C during winter. If you have children, the elderly, or people with health issues, the minimum temperature should be above 20 C degrees. If your indoor temperature falls below this range, it may be time to turn the heat on!

            Personal Preference

The WHO recommended temperature value above may not cater to everyone. You may have a different comfort threshold. If you are someone who doesn’t feel that cold, even if it’s below 18 degrees, you don’t have to turn on the heat. You can continue saving energy! On the other hand, if you feel chilly and uncomfortable when it’s 25 C indoors, you can definitely use your heating unit. Your personal comfort should be your top priority.

            Sleep Temperature

The ideal sleeping temperature is accepted to be around 18 C. For a comfortable sleep, it is recommended to keep your thermostat set between 15 – 19 C degrees.

In case your bedroom temperature goes below 18 C at night, you can turn on the heating system for a few hours. To save on energy, try turning the thermostat back 7 – 10 degrees from your daytime settings. For instance, if your thermostat is set to 20 C during the day, you can lower it to 17 C at night. You can also use warm bedding and a blanket to keep yourself comfortable without cranking up the heat.

What Is The Best Thermostat Setting For Winter?

Cielo Breez plus maintaining ideal room temperature

The ideal thermostat settings for winter are between 20 – 22 C when you are at home. This range is a perfect balance of comfort and energy savings. You can save even more when you are away or sleeping by turning the thermostat back 7 – 10 degrees from your usual temperature settings.

Tip: Manually adjusting the thermostat for separate daytime and nighttime settings can be a hassle. A smart thermostat or a smart AC controller that works with a mini – split, window, or portable heat pump can help automate your home climate. With these smart devices, you can easily set schedules, and your temperature settings will be applied automatically at your set timings.

What To Do Before Switching On Your Heating System

Before turning on the heat, you need to take a few important steps, like checking the heating system and making sure your house insulation is at par. With the proper preparations, you can easily stay warm and cozy in the winter season.

            •  Upgrade Your Thermostat
            Woman using smart thermostat
            •  Find & Fix Air Leaks

You might not pay attention to small air leaks, but they can significantly affect your home comfort and energy bills in the longer run. Cold air can infiltrate your home through cracks and gaps, while hot air from your HVAC unit can easily leak out. Finding and fixing air leaks in your home can help lower your energy costs by an average of 15%.

Drafts are commonly found around doors, windows, pipes, floorboards, chimneys, ductwork, and wiring holes. You can use caulk to seal small gaps around your home. To fill in the leaks in doors and windows, apply weatherstripping. Silicone – based filler can be used to fill the cracks in your floorboards. Also, check for leaks around your air ducts. You can use foil tape or apply duct mastic to cover the duct holes and prevent heat from seeping through.

            •  Perform Tune – ups

One of the best ways to ensure your unit is running at its best is by performing regular HVAC tune – ups. This means cleaning AC filters and checking for any signs of damage, leaks, or wear and tear. If necessary, schedule a maintenance check with a professional technician. This helps detect any issues, such as unusual HVAC smells or sounds.

A repairman fixing mini-split heat pump
            •  Test Run Your Heating System

After you have performed the tune-ups, do a practice run before it gets cold. This helps to detect any issues early on and prevents you from suffering in the cold due to a faulty HVAC system.

            •  Increase Your Home’s Humidity Levels

As the temperature drops, the humidity levels also plummet. And when you are going to turn the heating unit on, it is going to further strip the moisture from the air. Dry winter air can cause various health issues like an increase in allergies, dry skin, respiratory problems, and nose bleeds. Moreover, it can also pose damage to your wooden floor, furniture, and walls. To increase humidity in your home, you can bring in houseplants, air dry your clothes or invest in a humidifier.

            •  Check Safety Alarms

Smoke alarms are one of the most important safety devices in your home. In case if anything goes wrong when heating, you need your smoke alarm to work. In order for them to perform their job, they require routine maintenance. Not regularly checking your smoke alarms increases the possibility of their failure, and that can put you in harm’s way. So, it’s best to test your smoke alarms before the heating season starts to ensure they are working fine. If your alarm or the detector uses a battery, check if it needs replacement.

How To Delay Putting The Heat On?

Due to increasing power prices, you may be reluctant to turn on your heater until you really need it in a bid to save on bills. However, you don’t have to feel uncomfortable in your own home. Here are some steps you can take to keep yourself warm without any compromises. You can also apply these tips to make your home more energy efficient when the heating is on.

            •  Let the Warmth In

To improve warmth in your home, consider opening your drapes or blinds in the morning to let the sunshine in. This will help accumulate heat during the day, and you can close them at night to retain warmth.

            •  Invest in a Room Heating Unit

Running your central HVAC system in the fall may lead to energy wastage as your whole house may not require heating. A better way to keep warm without driving up the bills is to perhaps invest in a small space heating, portable heat pump, or consider HVAC zoning. The best part about portable heat pumps is that you can move them from one room to another when needed. It works like any other heat pump by drawing in heat from the outside air, then circulating it inside.

            • Get Thermal Curtains

Thermal curtains can trap the air between the different layers of fabric, providing an insulating effect. This means that the temperature outside will not affect your indoor environment.

            thermal curtains
            •  Layer Your Clothes

Putting on some extra layers is an obvious way to regulate your body temperature and stay warm without a heater. A sweater or a cardigan can definitely keep you comfortable on chilly fall evenings, allowing you to save the big switch for a later date.

            •  Use Floor Rugs
A simple yet comfortable living room

Floor rugs have long been valued as an aesthetic element, but beyond their decorative function, they serve a practical purpose, helping to minimize heat loss. Floor rugs work by trapping tiny pockets of air between the rug fibers, slowing down the flow of heat from one side of the rug to the other. So, invest in a thick rug with a high stitch count; your feet will surely thank you.

            •  Make Use of Draft Stoppers

Using a draft stopper at the bottom of the doors and windows is one of the simplest ways to keep your home warm. This prevents cold air from seeping into your home.

What if Your Heating Unit Doesn’t Turn On?

Sometimes, when you turn on your heating unit after a long summer, it doesn’t function properly. Here are some troubleshooting tips to help you deal with heating problems:

Check Your Thermostat – One common issue why your thermostat isn’t working is lack of power. If your thermostat is battery-powered, try replacing the batteries. For hardwired systems, check the circuit breaker and reset it if it has tripped. Also, check for blown fuses and call an HVAC technician for replacement if that’s the case. If that doesn’t solve the issue, try resetting your thermostat.

Clean Your AC Filters – The AC filters need regular cleaning for efficient performance. If you haven’t inspected them before turning the heater on, your unit may have trouble functioning properly.

Check Your Outdoor Unit – When your heating unit isn’t used during the summer, dirt and debris can get stuck in the outdoor unit and cause issues. Clean the outdoor unit before turning the on unit. Also, trim vegetation around it to prevent leaves or twigs from getting inside.

Remove Obstructions – Move furniture pieces that are blocking the vents so there is no airflow issue and warm air can easily circulate around. Also, ensure your thermostat is not behind a curtain or a furniture piece, as this blocks airflow, leading to incorrect temperature measurements.

Deciding To Turn On The Heater

If you are wondering when it’s time to start warming up in the fall, just keep in mind that there is no hard – and – fast rule for when to turn on the heater. Whether you choose to leave it off until temperatures drop significantly or turn it on as soon as fall hits is a personal decision that depends on your specific situation. If you are looking to save some bucks before the freezing weather, you can delay turning on the heat by letting the sun in, weatherizing your home, or sliding into a cozy blanket. And once you have decided that it’s time to crank up the heat, be sure to invest in smart climate control devices to keep your heating bills in check without compromising on your comfort.

Ever – increasing electricity bills are a great source of frustration and economic insecurity. With the extreme changes in the climate, it seems like no matter what you do, you can’t keep up with the skyrocketing electric bills. However, don’t lose hope just yet! There is a lot you can do to lower your electric bill. For example, switching to a smart thermostat or smart AC controller for automated heating/cooling can save you a lot on bills. Read ahead to find out why your electric bill is so high and how you can get it under control. With these handy tips, you will be saving big bucks in no time!

Causes Of A High Electric Bill

While you may think you are doing all you can to save electricity, you may have picked up some unfavorable habits over the years that are making your electricity bill skyrocket.

              1. You are lazy about AC maintenance

              Electric Bill, Mechanical Engineering

Air conditioning costs account for 17% of total home electricity expenditures. In more humid climates, this figure increases to 27%. Neglecting maintenance can make this number grow exponentially. For example, if your AC filters are blocked, your air conditioner will have to work harder to provide the same level of cooling, thus consuming more electricity. Moreover, regular AC maintenance will also save you expensive repairs down the line.

              2. You Have Leaky Doors and Windows

Windows and doors are major sources of air leaks. Even when your walls are well – insulated, if the weatherstripping or caulking on your doors and windows has worn out, your air conditioner or heater will struggle to do its job properly. As a result, it will have to work overtime, leading to an increased electric bill. Before you start loading up on caulk and weatherstripping, it’s important to know exactly where the air leaks are. Read this handy blog on finding and fixing air leaks to ensure your electricity bills stay as low as possible.

              Electric Bill, Mechanical Engineering

              3. You Use the Most Energy During Peak Times

If you have been wondering why your electricity bill is so high despite limiting your usage, look at when you consume the most electricity. Electric companies charge higher rates during peak times to limit excess energy consumption. Therefore, if your electric bill is still too high, you can save your electricity bill by not using the electronics at the same time as everyone else!

In summers, peak hours are usually between noon and 6PM when everyone is blasting their aircon units at full. Simply limiting usage during this time, or running your AC at a higher temperature, can make a difference and help you lower your electric bill. Other than the aircon unit, avoid using the washing machine, vacuum, dishwasher, and other appliances at peak hours to keep your energy consumption in check.

              4. Your Home Is Inadequately Insulated

Inadequate insulation could also be the reason why your electric bill is so high. As a general rule, heat travels from areas with a higher temperature to areas with a lower temperature. Consequently, indoor heat is trying to escape outdoors in the winter. As a result, your air conditioner struggles to maintain a cooler temperature during the summer, and your heater struggles to maintain a warmer temperature during the winter. Proper insulation prevents heat transfer through conduction, convection, and radiation – making it easier for your air conditioner to maintain your desired temperature. Your AC no longer has to run overtime to heat or cool the room. This saves energy and prevents a high electric bill.

Electric Bill, Mechanical Engineering5. You Have an Old HVAC System or Other Old Appliances

Old air conditioners use a shocking amount of electricity. An average air conditioner can last for 10 – 15 years. After that, as they get older, individual parts, such as the compressor, become less efficient. Older compressors use considerably more electricity. As Energy Star regulations become stricter, newer air conditioners have a much higher EER and SEER rating than older ones.

Apart from air conditioners, older appliances, such as refrigerators or washing machines, can be massive energy hogs. Natural wear and tear decrease the efficiency of older appliances, and they have to run overtime and draw excess electricity. As technology improves, newer appliances are becoming more efficient. An old refrigerator consumes 35% more energy than an Energy Star certified refrigerator. Get rid of appliances when they have reached the end of their lifespan. If you don’t, you will spend more on expensive electricity bills.

              6. You Run Your Hot Water Heater at a Very High Temperature

Your water heater’s temperature could be why your electric bill is so high. Water heaters account for 14 – 18% of your total utility bill. Thus, you can save a lot on your total electricity bill if you cut down on water heater costs. But unfortunately, most households keep their water heater at a higher temperature than required. Most water heaters come with a preset temperature of 60C. However, experts say you can safely set them to a temperature of 50C. Setting your water heater at a lower temperature will reduce energy consumption and prevent scalding injuries!

Another ingenious method of saving money on your water heater bill is insulating it with a water heater blanket. This will prevent heat loss, and the water heater will not have to work hard to maintain the desired temperature.

              Electric Bill, Mechanical Engineering

              7. You Keep a Spare Fridge

Many people like to keep a spare fridge in the basement, unaware that it could be why their electric bill is so high. However, even if you are not using your extra fridge, it consumes energy if plugged in. If your spare fridge is mostly empty, consider if you need it at all. If you must keep an extra fridge, ensure it is always full of something, or unplug it. So the next time you wonder why your energy bill is so high, look at the spare fridge lying in the basement and consider flipping it.

              8. You Still Use Incandescent Light Bulbs

If you are still using incandescent light bulbs, they could be the main culprit behind your high electric bill. Incandescent light bulbs consume a lot of energy compared to LED bulbs. It is estimated that the average household could save €200 per year by switching to LED bulbs. Not only are LEDs cheaper, but they are also very long – lasting. Once you invest in them, you won’t have to change your lightbulbs for years. So what are you waiting for? Make the switch now!

              Electric Bill, Mechanical Engineering

              9. You Frequently Use the Dryer

Using the dryer for every load of clothes is a major cause of high electricity bills. A simple clothesline can make a drastic difference if you want to lower your electric bill. Each hour of using a dryer costs anywhere between 24 and 72 cents. So if you use your dryer for every load of laundry, the cost can quickly add up. To avoid these costs, whenever the weather is good, skip on the dryer and hang the clothes outside to dry. Your wallet will thank you!

              10. You Cool Your Entire House Even When You Don’t Need to

Most people only occupy 1 – 2 rooms at a time. However, they still turn on the air conditioning for the entire house. This is a massive waste of electricity and leads to excessive bills. To get around this dilemma, you can create HVAC zones. HVAC zones use dampers to let you divide your house into zones and set a different temperature for each. Your AC will no longer have to work unnecessarily to cool your entire home.

              11. You Use Your Dishwasher and Washing Machine Too Frequently

              Electric Bill, Mechanical Engineering

Appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines are notorious energy hogs. Apart from their energy consumption, they also need loads of hot water, thus increasing your water heater usage. Fortunately, saving money on washing machines and dishwashers is very easy. You just need to be a bit more responsible. For example, never run your dishwasher for a small load of dishes. Instead, wait for it to fill up completely, then run it at the end of the day. You also don’t need to run your washing machine every day. Instead, keep a designated day or two to do the entire week’s laundry. These simple and easy steps will greatly help you lower your electric bill.

Moreover, you can also give voice commands to your air conditioning unit. All appliances can be interconnected and adjusted according to each other!

                2. Geothermal HVAC Systems – Sustainable Technology

Geothermal HVAC Systems loops in ground. An advanced HVAC technology

Sustainable or green technology is the talk of the present and the future. In the HVAC industry, this means keeping the natural flow of air in mind and relying on a more efficient system.

Geothermal heating and cooling systems are an excellent option to start reducing your carbon footprint. Their major emphasis lies on naturally cooling a house using heat pumps, water, and an underground piping system. They exchange heat with the ground and no refrigerant is used, which makes them highly environmentally friendly.

During winter, the heat from the ground is absorbed and transferred into a building while in summer the heat is transferred to the ground after being absorbed from the building. Geothermal systems are expensive to install but they deliver double to four times the efficiency of other systems.

                3. Ductless HVAC Systems – Efficiency & Savings

Ductless HVAC Systems for efficient HVAC technology

Energy efficiency is the key to the HVAC systems of the future. Ductless systems are quickly becoming the system of choice as they are super efficient and their installation does not involve extensive ducts. This makes them easy to install and cost effective.

Another benefit of ductless systems is their zoning capability. In the case of a ductless system, you do not need to heat or cool an entire home, but you can simply heat or cool a particular zone.  These systems are very efficient with great seasonal efficiency ratings.

Ductless HVAC systems can be installed from moderate temperature zones to harsh temperature zones. The already efficient ductless system can be made more efficient by the use of smart AC controls. These smart AC controls are brand and type independent and you can control your ductless system from anywhere. Moreover, users can benefit from intelligent smart AC features such as geofencing, scheduling, comfy mode, and more.

                4. Thermally Driven Air Conditioning – Go Solar

Solar Air Conditioning Systems HVAC technology

Thermally driven air conditioning is a new HVAC technology picking up on the need for sustainable systems. It provides an energy-efficient cooling method and can be used as an alternative to traditional air conditioners. Instead of electricity, this system utilizes solar energy for cooling, and if unavailable then natural gas kicks in. This completely eliminates electricity costs!

While this HVAC technology is not extremely widespread, it is a great glimpse into an eco-friendly future. Thermally driven air conditioning systems remove heat with evaporation at low pressure. They are extremely effective and efficient however a high temperature (around 350F) is required to generate electricity from the solar panels.

                5. Dual Fuel Heat Pump Technology – Efficient HVAC

Dual Fuel Heat Pump HVAC Technology

A dual fuel heat pump is an excellent system for homes in areas where the electricity rates are not too high and during winter the temperature does not fall below freezing point. This advanced HVAC technology utilizes a combination of a gas furnace and a heat pump to provide efficient, cost-effective heating and cooling.

If the outdoor temperature is above 35 degrees, the heat pump utilizes electricity to pull in heat from the outside air. This is extremely cheap compared to firing up the furnace. Although, once temperatures are below 35, gas is used to create heat for higher efficiency.

When the weather is cool, such as in spring, the dual fuel heat pump comes in handy to distribute air. Even during summer, the heat pump circulates the refrigerant through the furnace’s air conditioning coil to blow cool air! This system has a high upfront cost but this can be recovered through energy savings over the next few years.

                6. Zoned HVAC System – Customize Temperature According to an Area

HVAC technology zoning with multiples zones in a house and cielo breez plus

An HVAC zoning system divides a house into different areas, each of which can be individually controlled by a separate thermostat. Different temperature settings may be required in different parts of a home and by utilizing zoning you can achieve the best temperature for each area. This is especially important to decrease usage in empty rooms. Zones can be applied to central air conditioning systems, VRF systems, or ductless systems. Zones can easily be installed in existing systems also by utilizing a zone control panel.
