TESSe2b: What – Who – Why – Where

TESSe2b Project – Thermal Energy Storage Systems for Energy Efficient Buildings is a EC financed H2020 four years project, that develops an integrated solution for residential building energy storage using solar and geothermal energy, with the purpose of correcting the mismatch that often occurs between the supply and the demand of energy in residential buildings.

That is achieved by integrating compact Thermal Energy Storage Tanks with Phase Change Materials (PCM TES) coupled with enhanced Phase Change Materials inside the borehole heat exchangers (BHEs), and using an advanced energy management smart self-learning control system.

A demonstration and on-site monitoring evaluation of small scale TESSe2b solution in buildings in three pilot sites (Austria, Spain, Cyprus) are being conducted in order to evaluate the system’s integration into buildings space, to assess the impact of TESSe2b solution in different climates and to provide evidence about its overall technical and economic feasibility.

The second workshop of the project was held in Cyprus hosted by the Cyprus partner, Z&X Mechanical Installations, at Neapolis University in Paphos on 25th April 2018 where TESSe2b preliminary results were presented to Cypriot stakeholders, potentially interested in TESSe2b solution. 
During the day, in the B2B meetings, partners and stakeholders discussed about the benefits and constraints that this solution could face in the market, with special focus on two technical aspects: PCM applications and the control system.

During the next two days all the partners of the project conducted their meetings and also visited the house in Miliou, Paphos where the local demosite will be installed. 

The property is a residential house in Meliou village, a small traditional village, 35km from Pafos town airport and 14km from the Latchi beach area. The surface of the house is 180m2 (100m2 of ground floor and 80m2 of first floor). It is built in a plot of 3500m², which is at a high of 420 m from the sea level. The building is of brick plastered walls and roof tiling. The underground area is rich in geothermal energy due to the number of water springs and underground waters. The house is 28 years old and it’s in good condition.

YIOLOU CO OP BANK – DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

(A) A solar system is installed to provide domestic hot water. The Solar system uses all the available solar energy and at times when it’s not enough a 3 Kw electric element is used.

The solar system consists of 2 Solar panels 1.50x 1.0 and 150 Litre Hot water cylinder.

(B) A smart VRV system is installed for the space air conditioning and heating of the common bank area. The system consists of 1 air cooled Outdoor unit (DIAKIN 49Kw) and 12Wall type Indoor units. The benefits of the air cooled VRV system from the spit unit type air conditioning is the efficiency ( 20 to 30 % higher ) , the less number of outdoor units and the ability to install the outdoor units much longer distance from the indoors . A split unit is installed in the server room.

(C) A complete plumbing system is installed consisting of: (a) Pex-c Pipe-in -Pipe for the central and final piping (with manifolds) of all the sanitary fittings for both the hot and cold water as well as the drinking water. (b) a complete sewage system consists of all the PVC plastic piping for all the sanitary fittings to the first outside manhole. (c) connection of all the sanitary fittings to the plumbing and sewage piping and installation of all the accessories. (d) 1 pressure pump system (Grundfos inverter MQ3-35) & 1 No. 1100L cold water tank to provide high water pressure to all the sanitary fittings, saving water as well as energy.

(D) Ventilation of the W.C, entrance area and archives with inline (supply and exhaust) fans, ducting and grills.

RENOVATION OF SCHOOL IN LYSOS TO COMMUNAL CENTRE

Lysos is a beautiful mountain village in the Paphos district which continues to preserve the Cypriot traditional architecture as many of the old houses have been restored.

Z&X Mechanical Installations Ltd recently completed the transformation of the school into a communal centre, with the renovation including installations of a solar system, a smart VRV system, complete plumbing and irrigation systems, etc. of which the descriptions are listed below.

( A )

A solar system for the common areas is installed to provide domestic hot water. The Solar system uses all the available solar energy and at times when it’s not enough a 3 Kw electric element is used.

The solar system consists of 2 Solar panels 2.0x 1.0 and 300 Litre Hot water cylinder. An electric hot water cylinder (60L) supplies hot water for W.C. areas in the basement cinema area.

( B )

A smart VRV system is installed for the space air conditioning and heating of the old school (Library) & the communal basement area. The system consists of 2 air cooled Outdoor unit (Toshiba 40Kw & 56Kw) and 15 Indoor units (2 concealed,  2 wall types &11 concealed floor types). The benefits of the air cooled VRV system from the spit unit type air conditioning is the efficiency (20 to 30% higher), the less number of outdoor units and the ability to install the outdoor units much longer distance from the indoors.

( C )

A complete plumbing system is installed consists of:

  1. Central pipes PPR-80, & PEX-c Pipe-in-Pipe and manifolds for the  final piping of all the sanitary fittings for both the hot and cold water as well as the drinking water. b) a complete sewage system consists of all the PVC plastic piping for all the sanitary fittings to the first outside manhole.
  2. Connection of all the sanitary fittings to the plumbing and sewage piping and installation of all the accessories.
  3. 1 pressure pump system (Grundfos inverter) & 2 No. 1600L cold water tanks to provide high water pressure to all the sanitary fittings, saving water as well as energy.

( D )

A complete irrigation system consisting of 2No. 3200L water tanks, Grundfos SP submersible pump, 9 zone controller and electric valves, and piping ring to all final points.

( E )

Ventilation of the W.C and cinema areas with inline fans, ducting and grills.

( F )

Fountain with two skimmers, two drains, 4 inlets, auto filling system, 25 LED mini lights, 21” sand filter, 0.75 HP pump, Hayward salt chlorinator all piping and fittings, electrical panel and controls.
