Daikin Europe Lifts Patents On R32 in VRF Systems

Brussels, 1 July 2022 – Daikin Europe N.V. released its ‘HFC-32 PATENT NON-ASSERTION PLEDGE’ which will provide free access for the entire market to Daikin Europe’s 30 patents related to VRF systems combined with HFC-32 (R32) refrigerant. Providing this free access will further promote the use of the non-blended, single-component HFC-32 refrigerant in VRF systems, which has a lower global warming impact than R410A, the refrigerant conventionally used in VRF systems.

The decision of Daikin to provide free access to its patents happens against the background of global attempts to reduce the impacts of HFCs on global warming, especially now that the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol*1 is being translated into actual country regulations. For the European Union, the European Commission is currently considering an update of the existing F-Gas Regulation, which might result in stricter requirements for the use of refrigerants. Also VRF systems will be subject to the new regulation, if it comes into effect. VRF systems heat and cool large buildings such as offices, schools, hospitals and so on. To do this, multiple indoor units are connected to a single outdoor unit, and a closed refrigerant circuit flexibly moves through the system, allowing individual temperature control throughout the rooms of a building. The HFC refrigerant conventionally used in VRF systems is R410A.

The F-Gas regulation will force air conditioning and heating manufacturers to choose a refrigerant with a lower GWP. HFC-32 can provide a VRF solution with such a lower GWP refrigerant. This is where free access to Daikin’s patents can accelerate the adoption of HFC-32.

Mechanical Installations

‘Daikin comprehensively evaluates a wide variety of refrigerants and promotes the selection of the appropriate refrigerant for each application, and currently considers HFC-32 to be the most suitable refrigerant for VRF systems.’, says Martin Dieryckx, General Manager Environmental Research Center. ‘HFC-32 has many advantages that can help reduce the environmental impact of air-conditioning. HFC-32 is a non-ozone depleting refrigerant and its GWP is one-third*2 of conventional R410A refrigerant. It provides excellent system performance and is readily available. As a single-component refrigerant, it is easy to recover, recycle and reclaim, which reduces the need for additional production of virgin refrigerant.’

Kazuhide Mizutani, General manager of EMEA Research Center, says ‘The patents that Daikin Europe pledged not to assert include those relating to the control of compressor rotation speed and safety systems such as refrigerant leakage sensors. The Pledge will make it easier for other air conditioning and heating manufacturers to develop VRF systems using HFC-32. Furthermore, promoting the installation of safety systems in equipment reduces the burden on air-conditioning installers to inspect equipment.’

Daikin Industries, the mother company of Daikin Europe, has pledged the non-assertion of the patents in relation to applicable air conditioning equipment using HFC-32 from 2019 in order to contribute to the environment. Apart from Daikin Europe’s patents,  the company simultaneously pledged today the non-assertion of the new 90 patents. Daikin Group aims to make further environmental contributions worldwide. A list of the pledged patents and the specifics regarding the pledge is available here.

The Perfect Climate For A Good Night’s Sleep

Have you ever woken up with a dry mouth and a sore throat? Humidity levels in your bedroom are likely to have fallen below the internationally accepted threshold for a healthy indoor climate. But what exactly is the threshold? And how do you create the perfect atmosphere for a good night’s sleep?

    Why does humidity matter?

Humidity is the concentration of water vapor in the air. The humidity level in your home can affect your personal health in many ways. Excessively high humidity, for example, is associated with higher concentrations of allergens, while exposure to excessively low humidity can cause health problems such as dry skin, itchy eyes and sore throat. Maintaining healthy humidity levels is important to make the bedroom a comfortable space and ensures a healthy sleep cycle for rejuvenation.

How can I ensure the perfect climate?

Humidity levels are usually measured by the relative humidity which is the ratio of water vapor in the air to the amount of vapor that can be present in the air at a given temperature. The best relative humidity for sleep has been a topic of discussion but most studies agree that the best indoor relative humidity is between 40 and 60%. If you usually wake up with a sore throat and dry eyes, the relative humidity level in your bedroom may have dropped well below the 40% threshold.

Ensuring a perfect indoor climate can be a challenge. In climates with extremely high humidity levels, it is a good idea to install an air conditioning system with a built-in dehumidifier . These systems automatically detect values that exceed the preferred humidity level (usually starting at 60 ° C) and extract moisture from the air to achieve healthy humidity levels.

For extremely low humidity levels, installing an air purifier with a built-in humidifier can help achieve a healthier, more comfortable indoor climate. For example the ionizer with Daikin humidification function, injects moisture into the air when the relative humidity falls below the preferred level (usually starting at 40%) to maintain a healthy humidity level. Daikin air purifiers also minimize asthma and allergy symptoms by removing dust particles and pollen from the air, and Streamer technology keeps the air healthy and clean by eliminating allergens, eliminating bacteria and removing odors. This cleaning element separates ionizers with a humidification function from traditional humidifiers as traditional humidifiers tend to accumulate pollutants instead of eliminating them, allowing them to continue to reproduce and possibly cause disease. And what about the noise? The Daikin humidifier with built-in humidifier is extremely quiet thanks to a new innovative device and a state-of-the-art quiet operation, making it one of the quietest series of air purifiers on the European market. The perfect solution for a good night’s sleep while at the same time staying healthy, refreshed and feeling comfortable.

        Roth Original Tacker System

Perfectly coordinated system solutions form the basis for handling demanding tasks in the installation of heating. The trouble-free connection of the pipes and the patented laying technique is therefore always the number one choice for all demanding applications. A perfect result is guaranteed, whether it is construction projects of family houses, apartments, offices or industrial buildings.

The demand for high-quality living spaces in both existing and new buildings is increasing all the time, and with it the expectation of state of- the-art temperature control. Whether it be for residential building, office and business construction, industrial and sports halls or open spaces – what was an exception to the rule yesterday has now become expected: usage-optimised heating and cooling systems that continually keep pace with individual requirements. It is therefore hardly surprisingthat the majority of planners and building owners looking for modern and advanced system solutions are now choosing radiant heating and cooling systems. The retrofitting of radiant heating and coolingsystems is also gaining in popularity.

The many innovations introduced by Roth over the years have made a significant contribution to this development. In addition to user comfort and freedom of architectural design, the decisive criteriain the selection of a radiant heating and cooling system are energy savings, hygiene and environmental protection.

An optimal room temperature profile with precisely adjustable dosing makes the performance capability of Roth radiant heating and cooling systems readily perceptible – day in, day out. Equally, negative impacts on room temperature (such as those caused by swirling air, draughts or heat accumulation) are a thing of the past. As a matter of fact, their march of temperature characteristicscorresponds almost precisely to ideal heating (see graph).

Experts know: the larger the heatradiating surface, the more effective and economical the room heating will be. In comparison with conventional radiators, the ideal room temperature with a radiant heating system is 1 ºC to 2 ºC lower. The resulting energy savings of 6 to 12 % speak for themselves, as do the lower system and flow temperatures. These systems are also extremely well suited for use in conjunction with equipmentthat produces renewable energy, such as Roth solar panels. Additional plus points are also to be found from the point of view of hygiene: the dryness of the heat deprives bacteria and dust mites of themoisture they need for survival.

Roth Original Tacker® System… proving its worth in millions of new buildings

Roth Original Tacker® System – for solutions that retain their value A system solution whose components are designed to work together in perfect harmony provides the basis for mastering sophisticated heating construction tasks.

The Roth Original Tacker® System (which has proven its worth a million times over) used in conjunction with Roth DUOPEX S5® and X-PERT S5®+ system pipes provides the ideal foundation for creating a heating supply system that will retain its value in the long term. The friction-free interlocking comprehensive connection of pipe and patented pipe laying technique is therefore always the first choice for the entire array of sophisticated applications. Perfection in the result, whether it is for residential, office or industrial construction projects.Three system steps to perfection The high-quality ex-works prefabrication of all system components – pipe, composite panel and accessories – makes it possible: the complete Roth radiant heating and cooling system is laid in only three work steps using the patented Tacker technique. Of course, everything is in accordance with a precise computer calculation and taking into account all valid regulations.

Roth radiant heating and cooling – comfort can be so simple Fase of assembly with a high degree of flexibility, paired with operational and building site safety and superior efficiency, characterise Roth radiant heating and cooling systems – even with unusual floor plans. The Roth Original Tacker® System makes assembly really simple and enables pipes to be positioned to the centimetre, with a view to achieving optimum heat distribution and cooling, even in the most difficult installation situations.

The underfloor constructions of Roth radiant heating and cooling systems conform to DIN EN 1264 (“Waterbased floor heating”), taking into account DIN 18560 (“Floor screeds in building construction”), DIN 4109 (“Sound insulation in buildings”) and the Energieeinsparverordnung (Energy Savings Regulation [EnEV]). The consistently high quality standards of the individual components and of the overall system are documented by a large number of marks of testing, monitoring and quality. System composite panel for radiant heating and cooling systems Simple, fast, in compliance with standards: system composite panels made of polystyrene particle foam. An excellent choice for heat and sound insulation. They provide a self-enclosed space at the blink of an eye during the pipe laying stage. This makes it possible to have a two-sided, self-adhesive overlap that is 30 mm wide. A secure closure against damp and screed (in accordance with DIN 18560) prevents sound and thermal bridges from forming. In addition, animprinted grid makes it easier to put the system pipes exactly in place in accordance with precisely calculated laying distances. A strong solution for high stresses The Roth EPS 30 SE 26 mm systemcomposite panel comes into play wherever traffic loads are high (in car showrooms, for example).

This composite panel or panel combination can be utilised under an appropriately coordinated screed construction with maximum traffic loads of up to 35 kN/m2. The Roth range of products also includesadditional insulation panels made of EPS or PU, which may be needed depending on the thermal insulation requirements of the application in question

How To Manage Your Swimming Pool When It Rains

While rain can nourish our grass, plants and flowers, it can also harm your outdoor pool water quality if left unmaintained. After all, with heavy rains come potential flooding, muddy water and debris in your pool.

Whether you are being proactive before a rainy winter season or need to recover after an unexpected rain storm, proper pool maintenance is required to protect the health of your water quality and equipment.

So your pool is ready for swimming when the sun is back, take a look at these tips and tricks on how to care for your pool during a rainy season.

What Does Rain Do to Your Pool Water?

Occasional drizzling or short rain showers are not problematic for your pool; however, larger storms with over 1 to 2 inch rainfall rates per hour could harm your pool’s water quality, surfaces and equipment.

Since rainwater is acidic and nitrogen-rich, it can lower your pool’s pH and negatively affect your water chemistry. In addition to irritating your eyes and skin, acidic pool water can render your sanitation and disinfection ineffective. So, your pool is not protected from unwanted bacteria and contaminants.

The most problematic part of heavy rainfall is that the acidic, nitrogen-rich water creates a perfect condition for algae to bloom. Nobody wants to be surprised by green water with algae on their pool’s steps, floor or walls.

How to Care For Your Pool Before It Rains

If the weather forecast is predicting heavy rainfall, follow these proactive steps to keep your pool water clean and healthy:

          1. Balance your pH and alkalinity in advance to keep your water chemistry in range.
          2. Shock your pool water and even raise the chlorine level 1 – 2 ppm over what is normally recommended or needed.
          3. Remember, preventing algae is key to keeping your pool surfaces clean. So, keep an algaecide in the water for defense against an algae outbreak.
          4. Brush your pool’s surfaces. Regularly brushing your pool walls and floor can help remove any small algae particles so that they circulate into the filter.
          5. Always follow your filter cleaning schedule. Clean your pool filter by following the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

How to Care For Your Pool After It Rains

Proactive pool maintenance is the best practice for keeping your pool water clean and clear during a rainy season. However, your schedule can get busy and a rain storm could catch you by surprise without enough time for preventive pool maintenance. If this is the case, don’t panic. You still have ways to treat your pool during or after a storm. After a heavy rainfall, follow these pool care steps:

          1. Excessive water runoff could bring dirt, mulch, grass and other debris into your pool. So, use a skimmer net or leaf rake to remove large debris from your pool water.
          2. Remove any remaining fine debris from your pool’s floor with a roller vacuum head.
          3. If algae has bloomed, use an algaecide and brush it off your pool’s surface, steps, walls and floor.
          4. Ensure the skimmer baskets and line basket are not clogged with debris and that the pump is working at normal rates. This will ensure the algaecide circulates around the pool to prevent algae from growing.
          5. Maintain proper disinfectant levels and balance your pool water’s chemistry to the proper levels. After a rainfall, it is important to monitor your pH and alkalinity.
          6. Super chlorinate the pool water with a chlorine shock to kill off any growing algae.
          7. Maintain proper filtration. A good filtration system can trap dead or circulating debris and algae.
          8. If an excess of soil and mulch got into your pool during a rainstorm, use a phosphate remover. Please note: Using a phosphate remover is also a good preventative practice throughout the regular pool season if your pool is regularly exposed to nature’s organics.

If your pool still needs assistance after a heavy rainfall, please contact your local pool service company. Your pool service professional can help with any additional challenges, like equipment flooding failures, cleanup from low lying flood-prone areas, etc. Whether before or after a rainstorm, following the steps above will help protect your pool and keep it prepared for a rainy season.

The Most Efficient Way To Run Domestic Central Heating During The Winter?

We are in the winter of 2021/2022 and when winter approaches each year, the temperatures drop and houses all around Cyprus begin to prepare to use their central heating systems to keep warm during the colder months. Below we offer some advice and tips on how to keep your central heating cost effective during those winter months.

            1. Service Your Boiler

Before winter arrives, your boiler needs a good service. This will ensure that your boiler is working efficiently without any problems or leaks, plus if you have a magnet filter, time to clean it out. You may want to consider having your boiler serviced during the summer holidays – heating engineers tend to get very busy in September/October as people start to turn their heating on and find it won’t work! Maybe best to get it serviced in good time so that if we get a cold snap early, you know your heating will work happily.

            2. Adjust Your Boiler Settings

It clearly makes sense to be aware of the boiler settings and to turn them down if you can. The lower the settings the less energy will be used and the lower your bills will be. Most people’s boilers heat both their heating and their hot water so make sure they are high enough to do the job but not higher than you need. Just turning them down by 1 degree will make noticeable savings.

            3. Insulate Your Loft

Heat rises. If you have a loft in your home, insulating your loft will prevent unnecessary loss of heat. Insulate your loft to the recommended requirements of insulation, currently around 270mm. This will keep your bills down while keeping your home warm. Where possible find out how else you can insulate your home in preparation for the winter months ahead.

            4. Consider Cavity Wall Insulation

It’s worth checking if you have cavity wall insulation and if not, get a quote for having it installed and ask the installer what the payback period for it will be. A lot of homes already have this today but if yours doesn’t, it will reduce the amount you have to spend on heating bills. It’s same principle of having loft insulation, by insulating the walls you are reducing the amount of heat lost through them. It’s a simple but effective option, particularly if you have a ‘cold’ house.

            5. Fix Draughty Leaks In Your Home

The biggest culprit for escaped heat is draughts. Inspect your home for possible draught leaks. They could be under the door, cracks near the windows, wooden flooring and so on. Where possible fix the draught leaks. It’s a self-maintenance that you can carry out quite inexpensively yourself – go to any DIY store and head for the draught proofing products and decorators caulk – you will be surprised how reasonable they are and how simple many are to fit.

            6. Use Your Central Heating Thermostat Efficiently

Your central heating does not need to constantly run at high temperatures for your home to benefit. While it may give you that toasty, warm feeling, your electricity bill will suffer. It’s easy to pop on a jumper and set the thermostat down a degree or two rather than setting the thermostat of your central heating higher. Try the lowest acceptable temperature of 18/19 degrees on the thermostat to start with and move it up by one degree at a time to find the acceptable temperature for you. Combined with these other suggestions you may be surprised at the temperature that feels comfy and even more surprised when you see your next heating bill! Remember you can always turn the thermostat up for ten minutes to give the home a heat boost. Just remember to turn it back down after it has done its job.

            7. Install Thermostatic Radiator Valvets (TRVS)

Your entire house doesn’t need to be heated to the same degree. Look at installing thermostatic radiator valves in each room of your house. These radiator valves will help you regulate the flow of water to your radiators which in turn will help you control the temperature required for each room.

You can think of the boiler as the central control unit, setting the temperature of the water that heats the radiators. What a thermostatic valve does is give you individual control of each radiator. The dial allows you to choose the ambient temperature around the thermostatic head, this in turn maintains the room temperature. The radiator will turn on and off at a lower more efficient setting, the higher the setting, the hotter the radiator.

            8. Bleed Your Radiator

Make sure that your radiators are full of water and not partially filled. The air is essentially replacing any hot water that would be needed to heat the radiator in order to be effective when in use.

              Solar Panels For Swimming Pools

Solar Panels for Swimming Pools! Heat Your Pool with Solar Power!

Solar energy has become a popular choice for homeowners who wish to generate their own clean electricity or heat and save on their bills. Even though electricity generating solar panels are the most talked about technology, solar thermal has been around for a longer time and was the first solar energy production to be widely commercialised in the UK. Solar thermal collectors harness solar energy which can then be used for space or water heating. In fact, one of the most popular applications of solar energy is swimming pool solar heating. These systems can heat your pool all year long with clean, free energy. Here are all their benefits.

Why Use Solar Panels to Heat Swimming Pools?

First of all, pools need to be heated even in warm weather, because they lose heat via surface evaporation. There are different ways to heat pools, such as an electric or gas heaters, heat pumps, and thermodynamic panels. So why would you choose solar panels? Solar thermal systems have a short payback period and will help you save money on your bills. While electricity and gas prices are constantly increasing and make your expenses fluctuate depending on the season, solar panels produce completely free and clean energy all year long, for as long as 20 years. Solar heating systems often have automatic control systems, so you won’t need to monitor them or spend any money on maintenance.

Pros of Solar Panels for Swimming Pools

*Depending on your geographical location and sun exposure, by installing solar swimming pool heaters you could keep enjoying your pool for up to 12 months.

*They have no additional costs of pool solar heating after installation and eliminate fuel costs.

*They last up to 20 years with no need for maintenance, and they usually carry a 10-year warranty.

*They are easy to install and can be placed on your roof or on the ground.

*They are the best choice for the environment and work in different climates, not just warmer ones.

*Solar swimming pool heaters are suitable for both residential and commercial purposes.

*Even the most extreme weather conditions will not damage the collectors: they are built to withstand hurricane-level winds exceeding 241 Km/h.

*The solar collectors work even in overcast weather because the sun’s thermal energy is unaffected by clouds. Active rain may cool them down, but they quickly regain their ideal temperature. Moreover, rain helps clean the collectors and makes maintenance easier than in dry climates.

How Do Solar Panels for Swimming Pools Work?

Swimming pool solar heating systems are efficient and easy to use. There are only four components in the complete kit: a solar collector, a pump, a valve and a filter. Debris is removed from the water through the filter, then the pump leads the water to the solar collectors, which heat it by using the sun’s energy. Then, the warmed water is pumped back to the pool. A flow control valve (manual or automatic) diverts water through the collectors.

Types of Solar Panels for Swimming Pools

*Unglazed solar collectors: this is the cheapest, simplest option. Unglazed collectors are not covered by a glass layer and are made of plastic or rubber. They have the disadvantage of being less efficient in cold climates but are much more cost efficient than their competitors. They are the best choice if you are only going to use your pool in above-freezing temperatures.

*Glazed solar collectors: these panels are more expensive, mainly due to the materials they are made of (copper, aluminium and iron-tempered glass). They are more efficient in cold climates and can be used all year long, even to for domestic water heating. However, both glazed and unglazed collectors can benefit from a freeze protection if they are intended to be used in extra cold conditions.

              Useful Tips

In order to maximise the efficiency of a solar pool heating system and to be as environmentally friendly as possible, there are a few things you should consider.

*Using a pool cover helps lower the evaporation and preserve the heat you generate. Pool covers are not required but are a fundamental addition to solar heating kits. Dark coatings are recommended as they capture even more heat from the sun.

*In order to maximise the panels’ efficiency, you should make sure they are properly exposed to the sun (South-facing installations are recommended) and free of any shading.

*The size of the installation should be between 30% and 60% of the pool area or more.
